The inverter is one of the hardest-working parts of a solar PV system. It converts the DC electricity produced by the panels into usable AC power, monitors operating conditions and often provides the first warning when something elsewhere in the system is wrong. When an inverter fails, generation can fall sharply or stop altogether.
We take enquiries about inverters that are displaying fault codes, repeatedly restarting, shutting down, making unusual noises or no longer reporting generation correctly. Importantly, an inverter warning doesn't always mean the inverter itself has failed — an independent technician will check the wider system so a replacement is only recommended when the evidence points that way.
Inverter faults range from relatively simple supply or communication issues to internal failures that make repair uneconomical. The right response depends on the model, age, fault history and compatibility with the rest of the installation.
Error codes can point toward grid conditions, insulation faults, DC problems, communication failures or an internal inverter issue. A technician will use the code as a starting point rather than the whole diagnosis.
A blank or unresponsive inverter may have lost AC or DC supply, developed an internal fault or been isolated elsewhere in the system.
Repeated shutdowns can be caused by overheating, grid conditions, insulation faults, failing components or problems elsewhere in the array.
Where an older inverter has failed and parts are unavailable, replacement may be more sensible than attempting a short-lived repair.
Sometimes the solar system is still generating but the app or portal has stopped reporting correctly — a technician can distinguish this from a genuine generation fault.
